  • “Phreek Party” With Phreek Plus One

Phreek Plus One are Italy’s most kept secret luminaries in the world of disco. They don’t play at Berlusconi’s secret VIP partys, but they like the Bunga Bunga funk. All in here. Well, they are also associated with jazz, in fact they are jazz connoisseurs and rare record collectors, and approved selectors, as a matter of course top Italien mix DJs.

Well, they are musicians, too, but never played the dodgy Italian Acid Jazz, while they were looking for the real cool good Baia Degli Angeli vibe, in fact they are at least inspired by Garage House, soulful 70ties and 80ties disco, Cosmic, Funk, Soul and Jazz.

Their previous released four EPs on Compost Black Label gained really cult status, while some tunes (for example like „Bikini“) caused a fuss on the underground  disco circuit and their 12“ are still in demand.

So you’ll find here their long awaited debut album „Phreek Party“ full of diced and spiced up boogie, funk house burners, pumping or slick groovin floor fillers, yes soulful disco-fied music, some with sheer blissful vocal contributions by Mr. White, Ovasoul7, Nasreen Shah or the legendary Antena.

Phreek Plus One are: Ivan Savoldi, Alessandro Cattenati, Giovanni Guerretti from Brescia.  The project  was founded by Ivan Savoldi (Ivan N.) and Alessandro Cattenati for their great love of Disco and funky music, while after some time a new component arrived in PP+1 : Giovanni Guerretti.

  • Nicola Conte Presents Viagem 3: Lost Gems of Bossa Nova and Samba Jazz

Balancing a mix of instrumentals and sung bossas expertly sequenced Viagem 3 is an almost classical take on Brazilian pop music

Travelling back to 1960’s Brazil the Viagem series takes its third voyage. Digging further still Brazilophile and Italian jazz don Nicola Conte has re-discovered eighteen choice rarities 1963 – 1970. As the global centre for all that was musically chic, these bossa nova and samba jazz hybrids blend the passion of South America and Africa with the sophisticated style of Europe and North America.

Often written to take bossa back to the people and in protest against the dictatorship that took hold in 1964 these long-neglected classics are expertly conjured together by Blue Note and Schema recording artist Conte. Poetic and wildly evocative the mix perfectly mirrors the creator’s laid-back cool and a swinging cosmopolitan Brazil.

Nicola Conte’s love and dedication to Brazilian music is astounding. Evident in his own soulful approach to his music Conte has brought to the fore a truly legendary era in jazz and Brazilian music that has until the Viagem series been long forgotten. The selection of so many undiscovered tunes is sure to reignite the flames for many who have been digging for these rarities since their initial popularisation.

“On Volume three I researched further to find tracks that are even more obscure. With a wider range to the earlier Viagem volumes – including tracks from the early 1960s though to 1970 – the music of ‘Viagem 3’ is deeper and uncovers many brilliant unknown artists who recorded EPs, but never full albums. There is of course beautiful bossa nova here with truly great arrangements, but this is not just a compilation of bossa.

For a more contemporary feeling I’ve tried to give a view on a different side of Brazilian music by incorporating darker Afro rhythms and very far out melodies and atmospheres currently so popular in the London and Tokyo scenes. This special taste is most impressive on the spiritual and haunting finale by Werther. There is a strong jazz feel to most of the tracks, which hint on the jazz club scene, some playing an important part in the Brazilian jazz story. The instrumentals from Bossa Trio, Wan Trio, Brasil 40 Graus have long been staples of my DJ set and some of my very favourite tracks from the record collection.

Dalmo Castello’s track ‘Fora de Hora’ impressed me most with Edu Lobo inspired strings and broken samba. Lobo’s mid-60s sound – influenced by the new bossa sound, elements of northeastern music and socially conscious lyrics – has a strong resonance with many of these recordings as protest songs deeply unpopular with the rising Brazilian military dictatorship. These are fine classics that define this time of great creativity and change. I truly believe that this period was the peak of Brazilian music.”

  • Les Nubians “Nü Revolution”

Les Nubians, consisting of Paris-born sisters Hélène and Célia Faussart, return to the world stage with the release of their third album, Nü Revolution, on April 19th via Shanachie Entertainment.

The Grammy nominated duo fully delivers on the promise of their breakthrough efforts with a relentlessly enchanting and energized mix of R&B, hip-hop, African music and other world elements.

“The main difference between this album and the others,” muses Hélène, “is that Nü Revolution is more uptempo. This album is a celebration of life! We wanted to bring and spread this energy, this joy in a time of uncertainty.”

Indeed Nü Revolution may be the most impressive representation of Les Nubians’ Afropean Soul to date. Featuring special guests ranging from African music legend Manu Dibango, whose “Soul Makossa” crossover classic gets a politically charged make-over, to indie soul icon Eric Roberson, with South African pop stars Freshly Ground, Ghanian-American MC Blitz The Ambassador and Polish MC John Banzaï along for the ride. Somehow, Les Nubians manage to make the blend of so many diverse elements seem logical and organic; it flows quite naturally from their multicultural lives.

  • From Accra to America: The Blazing Rap of Blitz the Ambassador

With a lightning-fast mind, the political boldness of Chuck D, and the sixth groove sense of Fela Kuti, the Ghanaian-born, New York-based MC, composer, and producer Blitz the Ambassador unleashes psychedelic Afrobeat colors and triple-time rhymes on Native Sun (Embassy MVMT; May 3, 2011). The album was sparked in Accra, Ghana yet forged in the African diaspora.

Native Sun—as both musical journey and a striking short film—unfolds from a kaleidoscope of perspectives, with help from a Rwandan sweet soul singer (Corneille on the track “Best I Can”), from sleek Francophone sirens (Les Nubians on “Dear Africa”) and from Congolese and Brazilian samba-loving MCs (Baloji and BNegão on “Wahala”). Blitz even got a boost—including an invite to play at a packed Central Park SummerStage show—from Public Enemy’s Afrocentric thinker and rapper Chuck D himself (whose shout outs grace “Oracle”).
